How would Caracalla do in modern times?I think Caracalla would do a horrible job in modern times.
He would probably kill the whole opposing party (Democrat or Republican) along with anyone who doesn’t agree with him. Another reason why he would be horrible, all he did was focus on two things, his power and his safety. He only cared about having power, simply to have control over others, and to have everything go his way. Also, he would do anything for his own safety. Even if that meant having the military support you and the people hating you.

What innovations occurred during their reign? He finished the Roman bath complex (His father may have been the one to start it). Visiting the baths was a way of life, both a cleansing ritual and part of the social society for the romans. Caracalla’s baths were one of the largest structures built. It was originally covered from floor to ceiling with marble and bronze, paintings and sculptures.
Did they target a particular demographic? If so, how and why?The only people he targeted were, people who were still loyal to his brother, Geta. And anyone who disagreed with him or did not obey him. Did they have any military conquests during their reign? Any attempts of unsuccessful? He spent most of his 6 years as emperor on the battlefront with the army. Waging war in Germany and in the west.
What was the emperor’s relationship with the senate? With the military? He convinced the military to support him after he killed his brother. He also gave them a large raise in pay. They supported him (at least most of them) till his death. Another time during his rule, he raised their salaries by 50%, so he woudl have protection (or at least he thought).
The senate was afraid of him. “When explaining his actions to the senate, he said he was defending himself from Geta and rejected the idea that the concept of two emperors ruling the empire could work. Declaring that, the senate could do nothing but tremble in fear be for his words.” (Herodrian 4.5) How did he rise to power? He was the oldest son of emperor Septimius Severus. Caracalla and his younger brother Geta had a rivalry throughout their lives. When the boys were teenagers, Severus took his family out of Rome and on campaign in Britain to keep his son's busy. Caracalla commanded troops, while Geta was given civilian authority on the island.
At the age of 10, (198 CE) he was designated co-ruler with his father severus. Severus died February 4th, 211. Caracalla was 22 years old, Geta 21. Severus’s last advice to his sons was “Be good to each other, enrich the army, and damn the rest.” There was now two brothers as joint emperors. Once they got back to rome, the situation didn’t improve. The government came to a halt because the two bickered on appointments and policy decisions. Some claimed the brothers considered dividing the empire into two. How long did he rule for?He ruled for about 6 years, 212 AD to 217 AD. From his father’s death, to his own. When did he meet his demise?April 8th, 217 AD - He was killed by one of his own bodyguards as he went to the bathroom in the woods.
What did the emperor accomplish? Which one was the most significant? He spent most of his time as emperor on the battlefront with the army. Waging war in Germany and in the west. He raised the soldiers salaries by 50%. His name marks one of the greatest roman structures. It was most likely started by his father and finished by him, the Roman bath complex.

How did the people of Rome feel about Caracalla? After he killed his brother, he went right to the soldiers, claiming he killed his brother in self-defence. He then gave they a big pay raise. With the army supporting him, he eliminated all of Geta’s many supporters. In the first few months of 212, he killed over 20,000 people in mass executions. Some brave romans protested, they were then killed.
He wasn’t crazy (Like some other emperors), just insanely paranoid and extremely ruthless. He would do anything to have his way and maintain power. |
